Hugh is a Pokémon trainer and one of the main protagonists of the B2W2 Arc.
As a child, Hugh decided to give his younger sister a Pokémon as her birthday present. Out of the Purrloin, Tynamo, and Pidove that his grandfather offered to him, Hugh chose the Purrloin, who unfortunately refused to listen to him, forcing Hugh to wrap Purrloin itself as a gift instead of a pokéball. Hugh gave Purrloin to his sister, whom it chose to listen to.
While training together, the pair was attacked by Team Plasma grunts. Hugh tried to fight them but was easily defeated, resulting in the theft of his sister's Purrloin. Hugh swore to get revenge on Team Plasma.
Hugh is attending the Pokémon trainers' school in Aspertia City, where he is taught by Cheren. He is constantly at odds with his classmate Rakutsu because he feels that Rakutsu spends too much time flirting with girls instead of training, so it is a waste of talent. Things come to a head when the new student Faitsu arrives, and Cheren decides that the best thing to do would be for the two—and everyone else in the class—to have a battle. Hugh defeats Petashi but loses to Rakutsu's Dewott.
Hugh is very hot-tempered and tends to pick fights over trivial matters.
Trapinch loses to Rakutsu's Dewott.
- Hugh is the only protagonist that is directly named after his in-game equivalent.
- Hugh's name is both similar in spelling and in sound to the word "hue", which determines the brightness of certain colors. This reflects the fact that Hugh debuted in Black 2 and White 2, as the version mascot for both games is Kyurem's two alternate forms, Black Kyurem and White Kyurem, which represent dark gray and light gray respectively.
- So far, Hugh is the only protagonist to not have an official Starter Pokémon, such as Emboar or Serperior.
