Blaine shouts that the only way to eliminate the Psywave twister is to blast an equal amount of energy right into its center, where Mewtwo is. Before Red's horrified eyes, Blaine and Rapidash plummet towards Mewtwo, until an enormous explosion obscures them.
The twister is gone. Red spots Blaine, collapsed on the ground, and he rushes over. Blaine shows him a Master Ball, causing Red to scold him: if Blaine has a Master Ball, why did he risk his life by plunging into Mewtwo's Psywave?
Blaine reminisces, recalling the times he'd seen and spent with Red, and Blaine confesses to Red that Red is the reason Blaine quit Team Rocket: Red, and his love for Pokémon, inspired Blaine and made him realize that he'd become a monster. Blaine, drifting near unconsciousness and possibly death, whispers that Red is the reason why Mewtwo will never harm another person ever again.
A rock hits Red, making him whirl and catch sight of Mewtwo, who is struggling, but still conscious. Blaine is too badly injured to be moved, so Red knows he will have to battle Mewtwo. He sends out his Poliwrath, but Blaine warns him that Mewtwo was genetically created to be the ultimate weapon in battle, and nobody can match it. Red sends out his Snorlax, Gyarados, and Venasaur.
Facing multiple opponents, Mewtwo creates the Psywave twister, immediately catching up Red's three Pokémon. Red then takes off on his Aerodactyl with Pikachu, diving into the center of the twister as Blaine had with Rapidash. Pikachu launches himself ahead of them, the Master Ball in his mouth, and bumps the ball against Mewtwo, capturing it.Red and Pikachu entrust Mewtwo to Blaine, telling him to teach Mewtwo as Red had Blaine, and as Red had Gyarados.
As Blaine watches Red, he says that a Pokémon trainer is someone who devotes their life to Pokémon, who trusts them and is trusted in turn. A trainer and their Pokémon take care of each other.
Red, with Blaine leaning heavily on his shoulder, sets off for the Indigo Plateau.
