Ruby and Sapphire arrive in the Seafloor Cavern. Both are thinking intensely, though about different topics: Sapphire is wondering how long the trip down here took, because it felt like a flash and yet she has the impression that it has taken days; Ruby is thinking about the damaged submarine they saw on their way down, and he's wondering if all the people of Teams Aqua and Magma were in them and if the Cavern is empty.
Sapphire suddenly realizes that she and Ruby are still holding hands. Sapphire is quick to correct this, shaking him off and declaring that she still hasn't forgiven him and she still doesn't trust him. Seeing the fork in the path ahead, she sees a chance to make her point: she tells him to go right while she'll go left.
Ruby grabs her shoulder and tells her to stay by his side and not be rash. Ruby's Mightyena senses the approach of enemies, alerting them before Team Aqua and Team Magma grunts emerge and attack them. Ruby and Sapphire let out their Pokémon and begin to battle.
Meanwhile, Mitch and Amber are working together to try to survive. The Kaien I is falling apart, with water gushing in; however, if they can reach the surface in time, they can still live. Mitch contacts Mack for help. The Kaien I bursts apart and Amber falls unconscious. Mitch grabs his hand and swims up frantically. The wreckage of the Kaien I floats at the surface.
Flying above the surface, Mack releases his Armaldo, who dives under and pulls Mitch and Amber onto the Kaien I. Using Mitch's memory flames, he learns of Archie's treachery. He puts Mitch onto Armaldo, who swims away from the Kaien I as Mack flies above him. Mack tells Mitch about the gym leaders' interference with Groudon, and he contacts Marge, who is surrounded by unconscious sat the Mossdeep Space Center, surrounded by unconscious scientists, to ask her to help them fight the gym leaders.
Back in the Seafloor Cavern, Ruby and Sapphire have defeated the grunts. Now two ominous figures approach them…
